Augmented Reality Applications

Augmented reality (AR) is an amazing new technology that uses computer graphics to blur the line between what is real and that which is computer generated. Augmented reality mobile applications facilitate the addition of information and meaning to real objects or places in real-time, and integrating this modern technology into a mobile device enhances the usability and functionality of the applications.

Advertising is one of the major uses of augmented reality applications, and nearly every company can benefit by integrating augmented reality into its advertising strategy.  Businesses can promote their products through interactive augmented reality applications, and by doing so, they can capture the attention of a large number of viewers and increase their overall business volume. Augmented reality mobile applications can provide users with the ability to view a product in 3D by scanning a brochure or other 2D image with a mobile device, or the ability to view information about your venue, including ratings, reviews, and sales or other discounts simply by viewing your storefront through a mobile device.

There are other ways in which augmented reality applications can be beneficial. Complex tasks like assembly and maintenance can be simplified by putting additional information in the field of view via augmented reality. Mechanics, for example, could wear glasses equipped with augmented reality applications to see a graphic overlay of the machinery superimposed on the actual one, and proceed to service the car in a simple step-by-step operation directed by a voice-over instructional system. This feature could also be useful for any consumer products that require a significant amount of assembly and can help add value to your product from the consumer’s perspective.

Augmented reality applications can be tremendously beneficial to medical, military, or educational institutions as well.  Images of hidden objects can be very effective for medical diagnosis or surgery and can be viewed in a more detailed way with augmented reality applications.  Examples of these include virtual X-rays based on real time images from ultrasound.  Augmented reality applications are also implemented in navigation devices.  This is particularly effective for GPS navigation systems and can even be used for the purpose of maintaining large industrial plants or other sizable manufacturing facilities. Augmented reality applications use tracking technologies like digital cameras, accelerometers, and optical sensors. Augmented reality applications for the military can relay pictures or blueprints from a satellite directly on to the soldier’s field of vision and map out the lay of the land including information on movement of enemy troops.

The other major use of augmented reality applications is in the video games industry. Augmented reality gives the users the feeling that they are the actual characters in the game and that they are actually present in the gaming environment. This type of technology can take the gaming experience to the next level and make your product far superior to anything else on the market.
