Augmented Reality Military Technologies

Augmented reality is an amazing technology that uses superimposed computer graphics to enhance the real world.  Augmented reality systems use tracking technologies like digital cameras, accelerometers, and optical sensors. A typical augmented reality (AR) system has three components that the user will use to interact with the AR system. These are the head mounted display, tracking and orientation devices, and a portable computer. With recent advances in technology, these components can now be consolidated into a single mobile device and can even be housed in a soldier’s helmet.

Augmented reality has the potential to completely redefine modern warfare, and the benefits and advantages this technology can bring to armed forces are tremendous.  With augmented reality, satellite images and blueprints of enemy terrain can be relayed directly into a soldier’s field of vision. This technology can also provide military professionals with crucial information about the position and movement of enemy troops, as well as the weapons they possess.

With augmented reality military systems, soldiers can get a clear view of the terrain, battlefield, enemy positions, and activities.  This nearly omniscient level of combat knowledge will enable military troops to act quickly, efficiently, and accordingly. Augmented reality military systems can also offer improved combat training.  The enhanced knowledge augmented reality provides can aid in strategic preparation, help to eliminate surprise enemy attacks, and ultimately reduce the amount of lives lost in combat.  Augmented reality military systems will play a major role in enforcing law and order in the future.
